Finding the Right Supportive Bra for Your Workout

Collaborative post by another author.

Starting a new fitness routine is a big step. It takes dedication and commitment, especially when you're a busy mum trying to find time for yourself. Having the right workout gear can be a real motivator and a good sports bra is at the top of my list. A comfortable and supportive one can make all the difference, whether you're heading to a yoga class or going for a run.

Not all sports bras are created equal. Finding one that works for you is so important. Here are some key features that I always look for.

How to choose a sports bra

Finding the Right Fabric

A great bra starts with a great fabric. It's important to find a material that can help you stay cool and dry no matter how hard you are working out. Look for fabrics that are designed to wick moisture away from your skin and help it evaporate quickly. These types of materials include cotton, nylon, spandex and some kinds of polyester.

Having a breathable fabric with a good airflow will also help to keep you cool. I've found that fabrics like the ones used in kinetic leggings are brilliant at moving sweat off your skin. It's so uncomfortable when sweat sits on your skin and it can even cause breakouts.

A Bra That Moves with You

Every single one of us has a different shape, and a good sports bra should be able to adjust to yours. While many are made with stretchy material, they can sometimes feel uncomfortable and not provide the support larger breasts need.  The material can also wear out over time and lose its support.

I've found that a sports bra with thick adjustable straps can make a huge difference. They allow you to get the perfect fit and support without feeling pinched. Racerback styles are a great choice too because they naturally hold everything in place and feel more secure.

Support Without the Underwire

The next thing I look for is plenty of support without an uncomfortable underwire. The last thing you want to worry about at the gym is an underwire digging into you. I used to wonder how a bra could possibly give enough support without one. The answer lies in the band's construction.

The band is the part of the bra that wraps around the torso under your chest. In a wired bra, the band isn't the main source of support. But in wireless bras, the band does all the hard work. A tight and broad band can provide just as much support as an underwire without being a stiff piece of metal digging into your rib cage.

Comfort and Fit

A sports bra should be simple and comfortable to wear no matter your activity. Seams can sometimes press against the skin when the fabric is tight, which is why you can sometimes see marks on your skin after wearing something tight all day. You definitely don't want a ton of seams on a sports bra. Look for solid construction, quality materials and a design that makes you feel comfortable.
