When Your Family is Changing

Going through a divorce is one of the most stressful experiences a person can face. It's a hugely emotional time, not just for you but for your children as well. Even when you know it's the right decision, it can be overwhelming, and it’s so easy to feel like you're carrying the weight of the world on your shoulders.

While I can't promise that you won't feel any stress at all, I can share some things that I've learned that can help. Finding ways to look after yourself is so important during this time. With that in mind, here is some advice that might help make things a little easier for your family.

Finding The Right Support

One thing that can really help to reduce your stress is having the right legal support. When it comes to something as important as a divorce, it is worth doing your research to find a good solicitor. Just like with anything else in life, there are good family solicitors and not-so-good ones. It's important to find someone who you can trust to get the right outcome for you and your children.

You should make sure you read plenty of reviews and look at how they work. You will want to get a good result, but you also need to feel comfortable talking to them about what can be very personal matters. It can be a good idea to meet with a solicitor in person to get a feeling for them and how they approach their work.

Moving Your Body

Exercise is one of the best things you can do to reduce all kinds of stress. When you are active, your body releases happy hormones like serotonin that help to reduce the stress hormones (cortisol). By the time you finish a workout, you will feel much better and that feeling can stay with you for a long time.

On top of that, exercising gives you something else to focus on. If you are in a class or playing a sport with others, you won't be thinking about the things that are causing you stress. Since exercise also helps you sleep better and keeps you fit and healthy, it is a great idea all around. I find that a family walk is a great way to do this with the children.

Don't Rush Big Decisions

It can be very tempting to make quick decisions when you are going through a divorce. You just want it all to be over and done with as soon as possible. However, taking your time can be a much better approach, especially when children are involved.

When you are stressed, it is difficult to think clearly. Making quick decisions could lead to regret which will only cause more stress in the long run. By taking a step back and really assessing the situation before you make a decision, you will feel more in control. This will help you avoid making a mistake and reduce your stress levels significantly.
