What to do before you set off on your family holiday

(Collaborative post by another author). Going on holiday with children can be exciting but also a little overwhelming. Between packing clothes, sorting snacks and keeping the kids entertained on the journey, it’s easy to forget about what’s left behind at home. Making a checklist not only helps you prepare for travel but also ensures your home is safe and secure while you’re away. Here are some essential tips to make your family holiday stress-free from start to finish and to make sure you don't arrive home to any nasty surprises.

1. Pack Smart for the Kids

Children often need more than we expect, so plan ahead. Pack extra clothes, favourite toys, books and travel games. Don’t forget to bring snacks and water bottles, having these handy can make all the difference during long car rides or flights.

2. Secure Important Documents

Check passports, travel insurance, tickets and booking confirmations well in advance. Keep them in one safe place, ideally in a travel wallet or folder so you can easily find them when needed. It's a good idea to have an electronic copy of them all as well, if you keep the copies in your emails or online file storage then you will be able to access the information even if something happens to your bags.

3. Prep Your Home

Before you head out, make sure your home is secure. Lock all windows and doors, switch off appliances (but not the fridge/ freezer) and consider setting timers for lights to give the impression that someone is home. You can get switches for plug in lights, or if you have smart lighting systems you can schedule the lights to go on and off. It’s also a good idea to ask a neighbour or friend to pop in occasionally to tidy up post and check for any problems.

One area parents often overlook is the plumbing. A small leak can cause major problems if left unattended while you’re away. To help avoid holiday disasters, check out this practical guide from 2nd City Gas Plumbing & Heating.

4. Don’t Forget Pet Care

If you have pets, make arrangements for their care well in advance. Whether it’s a kennel, a pet sitter or asking a friend to look after them, having a clear plan ensures your furry friends are safe and happy while you’re away.

5. Final Checks Before You Leave

Do a final walk through of your home before heading out the door. Empty the bins, check that all non-essential appliances are switched off and double-check you have all everything packed. This will help you relax and enjoy your trip with peace of mind.

Family holidays should be full of fun and relaxation so you don't want to waste time worrying about what you might have forgotten. With a simple checklist covering travel essentials, child-friendly planning and home preparation, you’ll be able to enjoy your time away knowing everything is under control.
