Melody the Musical Turtle is a cute toy from LeapFrog aimed at children aged 2 to 5 years old. The plastic toy has buttons all over it’s back numbered 1 to 10 teaching children colours and numbers as well as speed and memory skills. It’s a lot of fun and will also appeal to older children (and adults too).
There are three modes: easy, challenge and music. I think the musical mode is best for younger children: the buttons light up to indicate which ones should be pressed and result in the first line of songs like “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” before playing the rest of the song. It doesn’t require them to know colours or numbers unlike the other two modes and even babies will enjoy the flashing coloured lights and upbeat tunes.
In Easy mode a voice asks colours or numbers questions e.g. “press orange” which need to be answered before the music runs out. In Challenge mode the buttons light up in a sequence to be repeated testing memory skills. Who in the family can remember the longest chain of numbers? At last a game I can win! After each game there is a fun bonus round, these include challenges like asking you to turn on all the lights as quickly as possible or to catch a light as it bounces from one button to the next.
Before each game Melody (that’s the turtle’s name) asks you to choose whether there are one or two players. This is great because it means siblings can play together or you can play with them. It's a nice way to encourage children to take turns and hopefully prevent arguments.
There are two volume levels in case your house is particularly loud and the turtle uses 4 AA batteries. Depending on how much it has been played with in the shops there should be enough battery life for a bit of play time, but make sure you have spares ready to go.
With comments like “you really light up my life” the turtle has a bit of a cheesy personality, but it’s not as annoying as many talking toys.
Melody the Musical Turtle is available to buy from Amazon (and all good toy shops).
