Outdoor Activities for Family Fun in the Winter

Post by another author. Winter might bring miserable weather, instead of lovely snow, but it doesn't have to drive your family inside. Yes, it can be nice to stay inside with hot chocolate and something on the telly, but if you want to make sure everyone still gets fresh air and exercise, there are still plenty of ways you can get outdoors. If everyone wraps up warm, there's very little you can't do—except maybe swim in an outdoor pool. You can choose from lots of outdoor activities in the autumn and winter, even if there are fewer daylight hours to use.

Going for a walk is an accessible and free activity that the whole family can enjoy

Enjoy a Family Walk or Bike Ride

Getting out for a walk is one of the easiest things you can do as a family. Even if you live in a city, you can still walk around your local area or take a short trip to a more suitable walking location. Bike rides are great fun too if everyone has a bike or you want to hire some. You can make your walk or ride as long or short as you want it to be. They're activities that work for all ages too, with options like baby carriers and bike trailers so even the youngest family members can come along.

Go on a Scavenger Hunt

Winter might not have the flowers of spring, but there's still plenty of wildlife and interesting things to spot outdoors. Going on a scavenger hunt to see what you can find is a fun way to spend a morning or afternoon. And if you want to take it to the next level, try a Detectorists-inspired activity with a Deus metal detector. Whether you're looking for organic matter like pine cones or hoping to strike gold, you can explore parks, forests, beaches and more. Create a list of things to find or just see what you stumble upon.

Hit the Slopes

No, you don't need to go to the continent to ski. There are various places to hit the slopes right here in the UK, although they are typically artificial. Outdoor ski slopes can offer a fun day for the family, with lessons and children's sessions available so everyone can get to grips with it. Of course, if you really don't want to be outdoors, you can head to an indoor slope too. These often have artificial snow, rather than the astroturf-style surfacing of an outdoor slope.

Watch Birds

Feeding birds during the winter can help them if there is a shortage of food and it's also a fun activity for the family. When you set up bird feeders, you can watch them flock to get their fill. You can also just explore the option of general birdwatching. Head to your nearest park or forest, or maybe seek out some local birdwatching spots and hides that will allow you to get a better look at a variety of birds in their natural habitat.

Outdoor activities don't have to be off the table in winter. You can still get the whole family outside so you can enjoy the fresh winter air.
