5 of the UK’s Most Welcoming Beaches for Families to Explore

Written by Andrea.  A family-friendly beach offers more than just sun and sand. It must have safe swimming waters, high standards of cleanliness, easy access, and an environment that’s suitable for all ages. Thankfully, the UK has many beaches that fit this description, and each of the five that we’ve selected to hone in on is perfect for your next family beach holiday.

Family Friendly Beaches In The UK

1: Bamburgh Beach, Northumberland

Located on the picturesque coast of Northumberland, Bamburgh Beach is one of the top beaches in the UK. The water stays pretty cold all year round, so it’s ideal to spend a little bit of time in the water, and then explore the surrounding greenery. It also offers families a chance to journey through history as the watchful gaze of the Bamburgh Castle sits above them.

Your kids will be entertained with ideal kite flying conditions, while low tide reveals rock pools filled with marine life waiting to be discovered. Seabirds, including puffins if you are very lucky, can be spotted during their nesting season and you might get to see some seals who occasionally bask near the coastline. The beach itself is easy to access and has plenty of parking, while lifeguards are present throughout the summer months to make sure that everyone stays safe.

2: Sandwood Bay, Sutherland

The second beach on the list is Sandwood Bay, tucked away in the far reaches of Sutherland, Scotland. Sandwood Bay’s main claim to fame is that it has a long stretch of coastline that is largely untouched. It’s quiet and serene, and its natural beauty is on display. Particularly for families that are travelling from a big city, Sandwood Bay could provide the perfect contrast.

For families who are looking for something adventurous and rewarding, there’s a 4.5-mile hiking trail that takes you to Sandwood Bay's shores. While the length might mean that it’s more suitable for older children, the path promises great views and a chance to spot local wildlife along the way.

3: Blackpool Beach, Lancashire

For those looking for a beach that combines all the usual beach activities with a range of extra family entertainment, Blackpool Beach in Lancashire is your ideal destination. In addition to the long stretch of beach, the bustling Blackpool Promenade is always a hive of activity, and that’s only the beginning.

One of the main drawcards of Blackpool Beach is the Pleasure Beach, one of the most iconic theme parks in all of the UK. From thrilling roller coasters to gentle carousels perfect for younger visitors, the theme park will keep your kids entertained all day. After your kids have tired themselves out at the park, there are endless restaurants to eat at along the promenade, many of which have great views of the sea. Blackpool Beach is the perfect family day out.

4: Sennen Cove, Cornwall

Cornwall’s Sennen Cove ticks all the boxes for a family-friendly beach adventure. There’s plenty of room for building sandcastles, dipping toes into gentle surf, and soaking up views that stretch across to Cape Cornwall, with all of this under the watchful eye of the Longships Lighthouse.

If your little ones are interested in surfing, there are local surf schools that welcome all ages with open arms. This could be the perfect way for your kids to catch their first wave under safe supervision. If surfing isn't your cup of tea, both paddleboarding and sea kayaking experiences are also available.

5: Woolacombe Beach, Devon

Rounding out the list is Woolacombe Beach’s beautiful three-mile stretch of golden sand. This beach is extremely popular, having consistently earned accolades for its exceptional cleanliness, water quality, and top-notch facilities. It’s a great choice for a family-friendly seaside escape.

There are activities at Woolacombe Beach that are suitable for all members of the family. Swimmers will appreciate the crystal-clear waters, while the waves are the right size for bodyboarders. If you’d rather stay dry, many family beach volleyball games have been played at Woolacombe, and there are even horse riding opportunities along the coast.

Whether it’s the peace of Sandwood Bay, the crowds of Woolacombe Beach, or something else entirely, you won’t have any trouble finding family-friendly beaches in the UK. The country’s beaches are as diverse as they are welcoming, and families of all sizes and interests will be able to find something just right for them.
