Moving home can be exciting and is the start of a new chapter, but it can also be hugely stressful. When children (and even pets) are involved, it can get even more overwhelming. However, this does not have to be your experience. With a bit of planning, support and strategy, the big move can be a lot less stressful and more manageable. Read on to find out how to simplify the move with children so that you can quickly settle into your new home.

Planning Ahead

Planning early can make the move a lot easier to manage. Create a detailed checklist that has every task written down, including which room needs to be packed and by when. Keep it to hand so you can easily add or cross things off. To make things a bit easier for your children, you could involve them in the packing process and complete the move outside of term time. This will give them time to settle in without the pressures of school. Plus, it’ll give parents a bit more time and flexibility as you won’t need to worry about school runs or homework.

Make the New Space Familiar

When moving into a new home, ease the transition for children by prioritising their rooms when it comes to unpacking. Have their stuff in a separate box that is easily accessible so you can unpack it quickly and make their first night as comfortable as possible. It is also a good idea to use a similar layout and decor throughout the bedroom so that the space feels familiar to them. You could create comfort zones where they can relax and unwind, making the bedroom somewhere that they immediately enjoy spending time.

Help Children Adjust Emotionally

Moving home can be an emotional time for anyone, particularly little ones who form a strong attachment to where they live. To help your kids settle and regulate their emotions during the move, try to stick to their normal routine as best you can. You should also take the time to explore the new neighbourhood and arrange playdates with local children so that they can start enjoying life in their new home and make new friends. All this can offer familiarity and help them build confidence.

Settling Into Your New Community

Following this, you also need to make an effort to settle into your new community. It’s important you build a support network too. Doing things like taking part in local events, introducing yourself to your neighbours, and exploring the local parks can help you feel more settled. Once you start feeling like part of the community and make a few new friends in the area, you will feel settled and enjoy life in your new home.

Moving with kids will always be a challenge, but when you know how to make it easier for all, it will help you focus on the positives of the move.
