| Travel this winter without causing financial strain |

Winter has a sneaky habit of draining our bank accounts. With gift shopping in December, recovering in January and celebrating Valentine’s in February, it feels like one thing after another. Amidst the grey skies are dark mornings, it is only natural to you start daydreaming of something more exciting: travel.
Cost and value are always important, and when planning winter trips, the budget is bound to get a mention. Luckily, with the right strategies, it’s entirely possible to build an ultimate winter travel itinerary without breaking the bank for most people.
Start with the Big Picture Budget
We’ve all got an eye on the UK’s economy right now. Even as inflation has started to slow towards the 3% mark the cost of living crisis is still in the back of everyone's minds. When you are planning a trip, start with a “zoomed out” picture. Before doing anything, look at your finances and figure out what you can actually afford to spend.Don’t dip into your emergency fund, no matter how tempting it might be. If you return home to a broken boiler or plumbing leak, you would be in a real panic. It is always better to know exactly where you stand, so take a look at your numbers, get a figure in mind and stick with it throughout the whole planning process.
Choose Budget Friendly Destinations and Travel Styles
Research the best places to visit in 2026 and get strategic. Some destinations are notoriously expensive for eating out, especially Iceland and Switzerland which often top the global cost of living indexes. If you are on a tight budget, it is probably best to skip these for now or look at "destination dupes" like Poland or Hungary where your money goes much further. To cut costs, look at locations which offer self catered accommodation. Using an Airbnb, villas or hostels which offer kitchen access will allow you to cook meals for your family, which not only saves on costs, but may also be easier for fussy little ones who might not enjoy unfamiliar restaurant menus every night.
Save on Transport, Accommodation and Winter Activities
To save on transport, play around on flight comparison sites like Skyscanner and don’t be afraid of visiting during off peak times. Mid week flights are nearly always cheaper than weekend departures. You could also explore different packages, as sometimes they offer great savings, especially if you’re after cheap ski holidays in places like Bulgaria which are becoming huge for budget conscious skiers.Plan Around Seasonal Events and Weather Without Overspending
Everyone knows that travelling outside of the main school holidays is cheaper. Try to bring that same energy to winter; November and March are its “shoulder seasons” for a getaway. While you might think you need to travel in December for the festive spirit, many European Christmas markets actually open in mid November. Cities like Vienna, Salzburg and Budapest often start their festivities early, allowing you to soak up the atmosphere before the December price hikes. Similarly, high altitude ski resorts in the Alps often stay open until late April, meaning you can find much better deals if you are happy to wait for the spring sunshine.
With the right strategies, winter travel can be budget friendly. Once you have established your figure you can start turning those travel dreams into a reality.
