Design Ideas For Your Outdoor Living Space
Play with Dimensions
If you've ever watched one of those home enhancement programmes where a team of experts comes in and transform a plain square of scrubby grass, often enclosed by a dull fence of some nondescript appearance, into a magical space with winding pathways and hidden nooks and crannies, you'll understand what this header means. You can create a wonderful illusion of space by the careful placement of hedges, shielding shrubs and encouraging climbing plants to colonise areas of the garden. By not allowing visitors to see from side to side of the relatively small space and forcing them to 'explore' the area, you will make it seem and feel much bigger.
Make a Narrative
Use the above features to divide your garden into zones: here is the tranquil open green space for quiet sunbathing or reading on the bench; there is the 'kids' zone' where they can kick a ball, throw a frisbee or show off their gymnastic prowess on the climbing frame; and here is the cosy seating area where the whole family, and selected friends, can sit, eat, chat and generally while away pleasant hours. Add a warmly glowing firepit so you can linger after the sun has gone down and it begins to get cold. Transform your outdoor space with a wide range of firepits in the UK at Forest Fuel.
Furnish the Garden
While the intuitive idea of maximising space in the garden would seem to be removing barriers and opening out the vista, this is actually a good way to make your garden seem constrained and limited. Instead, follow the steps as outlined above, and add embellishments and points of interest that play into the narrative that you've laid out: a paddling pool and miniature football goal in the play area; a hammock, perhaps, slung between two trees in a shady nook; and some high-quality weatherproof and – above all – comfortable garden furniture for the social zone. Add lights too, so you can navigate the garden easily even after night has fallen – this is a truly wonderful way to make your garden part of your summer life, from dawn to after dusk.
After all, summer and long days aren't with us for very long, so make the most of the heat by spending every available moment outdoors while you can.
