Review: Selfie Mic

My latest giveaway is the brilliant Selfie Mic. Selected as one of the top 12 toys for Christmas 2016 by the DreamToys selection committee I would have loved this when I was younger. I'll be honest I'm quite a big fan of it now. Add a smartphone and the Starmaker app (free download from Google Play or App Store) and you have a personal karaoke machine that will even record a music video.

It’s basically a selfie stick with a microphone you can use as a handle and an earpiece to help you hear the backing music better. If you know someone who likes to sing with a hairbrush while looking in the mirror this is the perfect gift for them. It takes it one step further with the background music, lyrics and you can even add special effects to your video.

With the Starmaker app this Selfie Mic is hilarious for both children and adults. Pick a song (from a limited range) and you can record yourself with just audio or video too. If you want to record a video you can add filters which might go some way to cover the dodgy singing (maybe that’s just me). At 5 years old my daughter is a bit too young for it as there aren’t enough songs she knows (It’s got “Let it Go” and a few other Disney songs) and she can’t read the lyrics, but if she was a few years older I don’t think I would be able to get her off it.
Win this Selfie Mic in my giveaway
When you have saved your video the default setting is to make it public so there is a risk that your child could make a recording of themselves available to everyone who uses the app. I couldn’t find away to turn this off so leave them alone with caution.

You need to have connection to the internet for it to access the songs and there doesn’t appear to be away with playing with it offline. I have a small suspicion that it might run slightly slowly on Christmas day as thousands of people open their presents and want to use it, but I haven’t noticed any performance issues so far.  There are a number of free songs and more are available when you have tokens, you earn tokens for your performance, but the 1000 tokens free with the SelfieMic is more than enough for you to access all the songs so you don't need to worry about spending any more money.

The RRP is £19.99 and it's made by Worlds Apart.
