Review and Giveaway: Free From Ginger Cake Baking Kit

This weekend my toddler enjoyed her first slice of cake. I  have made her dairy free cake a few times, but she didn’t really liked it (the icing however she loved). I baked Spicy Ginger Cake using a kit I was sent from bakeit freefrom and my daughter loved it continually demanding more “cake”. The home baking kits from bakeit freefrom contain no EU listed allergens. That means they are milk free, egg free, gluten free, peanut & nut free, soya free and sulphite free (and vegan). The Spicy Ginger Cake is also delicious.

It’s rare to find allergen free food that tastes as good as, or even better than the equivalent with ‘normal’ ingredients, but the bakeit freefrom Spicy Ginger Cake was a hit with all the family. The sponge is moist and full of flavour. My partner often complains that ginger cakes don’t taste enough of ginger, but no one will make that complaint about this cake. Although it’s not overwhelming it’s definitely a cake for ginger lovers.

The kit contains all the ingredients you need to make the cake (except water) plus a skewer, loaf tin liner and baking parchment to wrap the cake in for storage. You should have everything you need to make the cake in your kitchen, but it’s worth checking you have a 2lb loaf tin before you plan to bake (it took me a while to find ours). This kit can be kept in a cool, dark place for up to 3 months before baking so there is no hurry to make it if you can avoid the temptation.

The contents of the baking kit laid out including instructions, bags with powder in, sugar, crystalised ginger, apple puree and a bottle containing brown liquid

The Spicy Ginger Cake is easy to make, but you need to have some patience. It takes about 25 minutes to prepare and nearly an hour to bake. It’s worth it though. It’s recommended that you leave the cake for a day or two before eating to allow the flavours to mellow and a sticky ginger layer to develop on top. I'll take their word for it because the smell was too delicious so there was no chance we would be able to leave it.

Bakeit freefrom have a range of allergen free home baking kits including chocolate ganache cake, carrot cake and spicy courgette muffins all available to order on-line here. They are expensive, but if you or your family have food allergies these cakes are worth it to have a delicious treat you can all enjoy.

Bakeit freefrom is a family run business. The concept was inspired by a variety of events including a middle son having a milk allergy as a toddler, gluten free friends and vegan work colleagues followed by a conversation with a colleague about the challenges of catering for a party with multiple allergies. Maggie clearly loves baking and it’s her passion for making delicious cakes that can be enjoyed by everyone which has driven her to perfecting the baking kits sold at bakeit freefrom.

The spicy ginger cake was shortlisted in the 2017 FreeFrom Food Awards and you can win one by entering my giveaway below. Giveaway closes midnight Sunday 29th October 2017, open to UK residents only, all normal T&Cs apply (and viewable in the rafflecopter widget).
