Essex Easter Egg Hunts and Events for Children for Easter 2020

If you are looking for ideas of places to go for activities and egg hunts with your children this Easter holidays then check out this list with over 50 places to go in and around Essex. Some events are just one a particular day, others run throughout throughout the Easter school holidays. Lots of them get booked up well in advance so get your tickets asap to avoid disappointment.

At time of publishing quite a few venues that normally hold Easter Egg Hunts haven't yet published the details of their 2020 activities. This page will be updated weekly as more information becomes available so please check back for more ideas of places to go. You can also check out last year's list here.

Abberton Reservoir Visitor Centre, Church Road, Layer-de-la Haye, Colchester, Essex, CO2 0EU 
Friday 10th to Monday 13th April 10am to 3pm. Explore the reserve, discover the hidden eggs and complete Easter themed crafts. Prebooking essential, but you can arrive at anytime during your booked session. Wear suitable clothing and children must be accompanied by an adult. £7 suggested donation, call 01206 738 172

Audley End House and Gardens, Audley End Road, Saffron Walden, CB11 4JF
The Easter Adventure Quest takes place from Saturday 4th April to Sunday 19th April 10am to 6pm. Hunt for dragon eggs by solving clues and claim a chocolate reward from Hotel Chocolat. Tickets available on the day and cost an additional £1 to the entry price of Adults £18.50, Children £11.10, English Heritage members free entry (but still need to pay for the quest).

Audley End Miniature Railway, Audley End Road, Saffron Walden CB11 4JB
On Saturday 4th April to Sunday 19th April  join in the fun at the Audley End Miniature Railway. Take one of the trains into the woods to visit the Easter Bunny and all of his friends at their spring home in Essex. Throughout the train ride, you can test your I spy skills and look out for various things along the route. Then try to spot all of the animals, nests and eggs throughout the Easter Trail back in the Picnic Area. Once you complete the trail you’ve earned yourself an exclusive easter gift. Are you sharp-eyed enough to spot them all? Finally, hop through to the Craft Area to create an Easter Craft to take home with you.
Tickets from £12.95-£14.95 per person, 0-24 months go free. Best suited for Children from 2-7 years. Booking required peak days (10th to 13th) but some on the door tickets will be available on other dates.
They have a new play area opening this season so it will be great to check that out too.

Audley End Miniature Railway

Barleylands, Barleylands Road, Billericay CM11 2UD 
Easter activities will be taking place from Monday 6th to Friday 17th April 10am – 4pm.  As well as an egg trail around the park, Easter crafts, the chance to hold newborn chicks and ducklings and bottle feeding lambs they expect to have baby goats born during the holiday which you might see if you are lucky. Adults £12, children £11, book in advance online to save 10%.

The Beth Chatto Gardens, Elmstead Market, Colchester, CO7 7DB
Explore the gardens and see signs of spring as you find the hidden eggs on this hunt to collect your Easter Treat. Self guided tour running from Saturday 4th April to Friday 17th April 10am to 4pm. Adults £8.95 entry to the garden, children £2 or up to 3 children go free if adult ticket booked in advance online.

Bourne Mill, Bourne Road, Colchester, CO2 8RT
Have fun following the National Trust and Cadbury Easter Trail around the mill and garden on Friday 10th April to Monday 13th April on the way you'll need to answer the clues to claim your reward of a delicious Cadbury chocolate treat. Entry to the Mill and Garden costs £4.20 for adults and £2.10 for children, the Easter egg hunt is an addition £2.50, booking not required. Easter Egg Hunt available 11am to 3pm (Mill closes at 4pm). Parking is limited.

Cammas Hall Farm, Needham Green, Hatfield Broad Oak CM22 7JT
From Friday 3rd to Sunday 19th April (except Monday 6th April) 9am to 4.30pm head to the the popular pick your own farm for their Easter Egg-travaganza to include: an Easter Egg Hunt, animal show (7th, 10th, 14th and 19th), ceramic painting (8th) and arts & crafts (4th, 9th and 17th). Advanced booking required for many activities.

Capel Manor Gardens, Bullsmoor Lane, Enfield, Middlesex EN1 4RQ
Easter activities are planned for Friday 10th and Saturday 11th April. Follow the clues to complete the Easter quest, meet the Easter Bunny, visit the animals, arts & crafts and pot your own flower to take away. Adults £7, Children £6, under 3s free.

Chelmsford City Racecourse, Moulsham Hall Lane, Chelmsford, CM3 1QP
On Friday 10th April there will be an afternoon of racing and a spring fair at Chelmsford City Racecourse. This family friendly event includes Advanced tickets £12.50 for adults and under 18s go free. There will be live music, rides and attractions, farmers market and shopping village, games and an Easter Egg Hunt.

Chelmsford Museum, Oaklands Park, Moulsham Street, Chelmsford, CM2 9AQ
Come along to the museum for free during the school holidays and explore Chelmsford's past with our superheroes - The History Hackers. An activity pack is available for £1.50 from reception. Running from 4th to 10th April from 10am to 5pm.

Chigborough Barns, Chigborough Roadm Heybridge, Maldon, Essex CM9 4RE
On Sunday 12th April there will be an Easter Egg hunt (from 11.30 am), BBQ and other activities. Tickets can be bought in advance for £3.50 from the tea rooms or on the day for £4.

Colchester Castle, Castle Park, High Street, Colchester, CO1 1TJ
On the Friday 10th to Monday 13th April the London Science Museum will be running sessions at Colchester Castle. Sessions are aimed at children over 5 and cost £3.50 plus castle admission. Sessions need to be prebooked on 01206 282941.

Colchester ZooMaldon Road, Colchester CO3 0SL
As well as all the normal activities and things to do at the zoo from 14th to 19th April there is an Easter Trail (locate the letters to find a word and get an Easter trail sticker) and take part in Easter crafts in the Discovery Centre for a small fee. Zoo entrance fee in addition.

Come 'n' Play Cafe, 65 The Broadway, Loughton, IG10 3SP
This small soft play in Debden High Street is a lovely for preschoolers. Their Easter party will be on Thursday 9th April 12 until 2pm with a special appearance from Peter Rabbit. Tickets for the party need to be booked in advance (£12.95 per child, £1 adults) and include a lunch box, Easter egg, face painting and 2 hours soft play. Tickets can be booked by calling 020 8508 4835

Copped Hall, Crown Hill (Upshire Road), Epping. Sat Nav postcode CM16 5HR
Join the Easter egg hunt and enjoy the spring flowers on Easter Sunday 12th April. Gates open 2.00pm-4.00pm. Car Park closes at 5pm and locked at 5.15pm. Entry £5.00 per person (children under 16 free) Egg Hunt: 50p per child taking part. No booking necessary. There will be tea, coffee and home made cakes available for purchase.

Cressing Chocolate Festival, Cressing Temple Barns, Witham Road, Cressing, Nr. Witham, CM77 8PD.
The Cressing Chocolate Festival returns for it's 2nd year on April Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th 11am to 4pm. There will be food, drink, crafts stalls, a children's chocolate trail and local entertainment. Tickets for adults £7.50 prebooked and £5 for under 16's, under 2's free. Tickets can be bought online.

East Anglian Railway Museum, Chappel Station, Colchester, Essex, CO6 2DS
On Friday 10th to Monday 13th the Day Out With Thomas event will be running where you can take a train ride behind Thomas, Daisy and Percy. Meet Toby, Henrietta and the Fat Controller. Complete your Passport To Adventures and Junior Engineer Certificate, watch re-enactments of classic Thomas stories and much more. Tickets cost £12 for children (2 to 15) and £16.25 for adults. Prebooking recommended.

Eastbury Manor House , Eastbury Square, Barking, Essex, IG11 9SN
Enjoy a holiday fun with the Cadbury Easter Egg Hunt at Eastbury Manor House in the heart of Barking. Using the Easter trail, you can explore the gardens and house and find Easter surprises along the way. Every completed trail can be traded in for a Cadbury Easter Egg (subject to availability). Entrance is free, Easter Egg Hunt costs £3, prebooking for the 1 hour slot is recommended. The Easter egg hunt is running 5th April 1pm to 4pm and the 9th, 10th and 12th April 11am to 4pm. Easter themed craft activities and face painting also available for purchase on the day.

Epping Ongar Railway, Ongar and North Weald
Catch the Easter Express on Friday 10th to Monday 13th April with Epping Ongar Railway. The Easter egg hunt takes place around the railway making it probably the longest Easter Egg hunt in Essex, children need to keep an eye out the window while riding the trains. Completed information sheets handed into the shops get a special Easter treat. There will also be appearances by Bertie The Easter Bunny and face painting (additional cost), magic show and balloon modelling.
Tickets are Adult £16; Child £10; Family (up to 2 adults and 3 children) £43. Under 3s free.

Essex Fire Museum, Grays Fire Station, Hoggs Lane, Grays, RM17 5QS
Tuesday 14th April 10am to 3.30pm. Activities include water squirting, sitting on the old fire engine and arts and crafts in the museum. All ages welcome. £3 for children over 3 years old, adults free. No booking required.

Foxholes Farm, London Road, Hertford, Hertfordshire, SG13 7NT
From Saturday 4th to Sunday 19th April they will have a lambing live event. They don't guarantee you will see any births, but with 120 ewes ready for lambing chances are high. There will be opportunities to feed lambs and interact with farm staff. will be lamb and goat feeding at the farm £9.99 per person including entry to the farm.

The Gibberd Garden, Marsh Lane, Harlow, Essex, CM17 0NA
On Sunday 12th April 2pm to 6pm enjoy the spring garden. There is a trail for children with a small prize on completion. Entry £5 for adults, £1 for children (free for under 5s).

Grange Farm Centre, Grange Farm Lane, Chigwell, Essex, IG7 6DP
Follow the Easter trail on Tuesday 14th April in the meadow before returning to the centre for a chocolate treat. Advanced booking required, email roding@essexwt.org.uk.

Hainault Forest Country Park, This year the Easter trail is taking place in Hainault Country Park in the Woodland behind the cafe (IG7 4QN)
On Friday 10th April go on the spring-themed Easter trail around the beach woodland to get a chocolate Easter reward. Craft activities also available. Sturdy footwear is a must as the paths are uneven and may be muddy (may also be unsuitable for pushchairs/ wheelchairs). Booking essential via Woodland Trust website £3 per child (adults/under 3s free if they don't want to join in).

Hanningfield Reservoir Visitor Centre, Hawkswood Road, Downham, Billericay CM11 1WT
Monday 6th April 1 til 3pm, Saturday 11th 10am til 3pm, Monday 13th 10 til 3pm, Saturday 18th 10am to 1pm: Easter themed bookable trail for and "eggy reward" trail sheets £5 per child
Friday 10th April 10am to 5pm and Sunday 12th 10am to 4pm Easter egg hunt, Easter-themed craft and pond dipping £8 per child. Booking essential.

Hatfield Forest, Bush End Road, Takeley, CM22 6NE
Make an "Easter egg" seed ball to take home for birds in the garden. Session costs £6, parking is £8 (or free for National Trust members). Running on Wednesday 8th and Thursday 9th April. Book here.

Hedingham Castle, Bayley Street, Castle Hedingham, Essex, CO9 3DJ
On 12th and 13th April there is an Easter Joust at the castle in this medieval themed event. Adults £15, children £10, save 10% by booking online in advance.

Herts & Essex Community Farm, Fold Croft, Harlow, Essex CM20 1SE
There is a Easter Fun Day with an Egg Hunt on Saturday 11th April 12 til 2pm. More information will be available in the future.

Hobbycraft (Various locations including Basildon, Chelmsford, Colchester, Harlow and Loughton-Epping Forest)
Most Hobbycraft stores run regular free or low cost craft sessions in store. During the Easter holidays they are running Chocolate Egg Decorating Sessions for £1 per person on 11th April and free sessions to decorate Easter Sun catchers on 6th, 7th, 9th and 10th April. You can prebook online and the Chocolate egg session looks like it is selling out quickly.

Hopefield Animal Sanctuary, Sawyers Hall Farm, Sawyers Hall Lane, CM15 9BZ
The Sanctuary's Easter Fun Day will be on Sunday 12th April, entrance costs £6 for adults, £5 for children (3 to 15), 2 and under go free. Meet the Easter Bunny as well as princesses (Belle & Rapunzel), complete the Easter trail, watch a children's entertainer and more.

RHS Garden Hyde Hall, Creephedge Lane, Rettendon Common, Chelmsford CM3 8ET
Full details not yet available, but the 2020 Easter event will run from 4th to 19th April with a trail to celebrate the new Secret Garden film. Adults £12.15, Children (5 to 16) £6.10, 4 and under free.

Ingrebourne Valley Visitor Centre, Ingrebourne Valley Visitor Centre, Hornchurch Country Park, Squadrons Approach , Hornchurch, RM12 6DF (Sat Nav RM12 6TS)
On Thursday 9th April you can decorate a chocolate Easter egg to take home £8 per child. 4 sessions run between 10am and 3.30pm. Prebooking required.
Saturday 11th to Sunday 12th April 11.00am - 3.00pm Easter Eggstravaganza for £8 per child including: Easter trail, coconut shy, tin can alley, egg archery, face painting, badge making and welly wanging.
If you have had enough of Easter trails then there are few different themed ones:
Tuesday 14th April at various times go on a fairy trail then head to the centre to make your own fairy crown £3 per child, advanced booking recommended.
Wednesday 15th April 2pm and 3pm go on a bug hunt, suitable for age 3 plus, equipment supplied, £6 per child, advanced booking required.
Saturday 18th April 10.30am to 3pm follow the dinosaur trail around the park. £3 per child drop in event.

Kids Play Bouncy Castles, Debden Park High School, Willingale Road, Loughton, IG10 2BQ
If you are looking for something inside to burn off some energy then this pop up soft play and inflatable event is suitable for 6 months to 11 year olds. Running from 13 to 17th April in bookable 2 hour slots starting at 9.30am, £6.50 per child (over 6 months) tickets available to book online or call 07572 681 101.

Lathcoats Farm, Beehive Lane, Great Baddow, Chelmsford CM2 8LX
The Easter event will be on March 28th to 19th April from 9am to 5pm except Sundays when it's open 10am to 4pm (closed Sunday 12th and Monday 13th April). Purchase your activity sheet for the Bunny Olympeggs for £3.50 including chocolate treat (dairy free option available). There are also free outdoor Easter games and face painting (from 5th to the 9th April £3.50).

Lee Valley Park Farms, Stubbins Hall Lane, Waltham Abbey, EN9 2EF
From Saturday 4th to Sunday 19th April visit the farm to see lots of baby animals, feed baby lambs, see the Easter bunny in the grotto, enjoy Easter crafts and collect eggs. On Easter weekend (10th to 13th) there is an Easter egg hunt trail at the farm too. Open 10am to 5pm everyday. Tickets £13 (save 10% if you book in advance), under 2s free and group discount available.

Lee Valley Easter Bank Holiday Country Fair, River Lee Country Park, Highbridge Street, Waltham Abbey EN9 1AB
Taking place Easter weekend there is a family Country show on Sunday 12th and Monday 13th April  10am to 5pm. There’s something for everyone to enjoy with all day entertainment, birds of prey & owl flying displays, terrier racing, children’s entertainer Devilstick Peat, Wild West Show from the Equestrienne Horse Stunt Display Team, Jez Avery’s Stunt Bikes and Buggies, bottle feeding lambs and kids and Children’s petting pens.  Adults £7.50, Children £4, under 5s free or book online for reduced entry. Free parking.

Marsh Farm, South Woodham Ferrers CM3 5WP
The 2020 Easter event will take place from 4th to 19th April and will see a return of their fun Easter Grotto, a giant Easter Egg Hunt and baby animals as well as all their normal activities available every day between 10am to 5pm. It costs £13 per person in advance or £15.50 on the door. Under 2s are free or £2 if they want to join in the egg hunt and receive a chocolatey reward.  Read about our Easter visit to Marsh Farm and their Easter Grotto last year (we were gifted entry).

Monty's Menagerie, 7 Coggleshall Road, Earls Colne, Colchester CO6 2PG
On Saturday 18th April this petting zoo is having a special Eden Falconry event.  Entrance is £5 per person (under 2's free) and includes entrance to the farm, animal feed and the chance to hold some small animals. There will also be pony rides between 11 and 1pm and bottle feeding lambs and food stalls.

Mountfitchet Castle, Stansted CM24 8SP
From 4th to 13th April follow the clues to find the lost Knight’s of Mountfitchet Castle who mysteriously disappeared on the trail of the legend of the Golden Egg! Open between 10am and 5pm, trail included in Castle entry price: £12 adults, £10 3 to 13 year olds.

The Naze Centre, Old Hall Lane, Walton-on-the-Naze, CO14 8LE
Sunday 12th April 10am to 3pm (with a short break at 12.30) there will be pygmy goats and chicks to see and hold. No booking required, £3 per person.
Monday 13th and Wednesday 15th April 10 to 11.30 am there is a group fossil hunt starting in the classroom to introduce the Naze geology and where to find fossils. Booking essential, £3 per person.

Old Macdonald's Farm, Weald Road, Brentwood, Essex, CM14 5AY
The Easter festival is from Saturday 4th to Sunday 19th April 10am to 5pm. Themed rabbit hole maze, chicks, ducklings and baby rabbits encounters, circus workshops, magic shows, arts and crafts as well as the Easter egg hunt and all the normal activities and animals. On the Bank Holiday there will also be Easter arts and crafts and face painting. Entry costs £18 for adults, £17 for children (under 2s free). Save between £2 and £4.50 by booking in advance online.

Parndon Wood Nature Reserve, Parndon Wood Road, Harlow, Essex CM19 4SF
Easter themed craft drop in, prices starting at £1.50 and include chick plant pot and bunny tea light. Also face painting and glitter tattoo.

Paycocke’s House and Gardens, 25 West Street, Coggeshall, Colchester, CO6 1NS
The Cadbury Bunny has hidden eggs all around the National Trust house and garden. Take a map and follow the clues and a delicious treat will be waiting for you at the end. Friday 10th to Tuesday 14th April 10am to 4pm. £2.50 per hunt plus entry Adult £8.30 , Child £4.15. Parking available at the sister property, Grange Barn, which is a 10 minute walk away.

Poplar Nurseries, Coggeshall Road, Marks Tey, CO6 1HR
The garden centre has numerous Easter themed activities from 6th April onwards including:Easter Egg weaving, Bunny Masks and Easter Biscuit decorating. Sessions cost between £3.50 and £4.25 per person and you can book them here.

Riverside Leisure Centre, Victoria Road, Chelmsford, Essex, CM1 1FG
Not Easter themed, but watching the amateur production of Beauty and The Beast on Ice is something different to do during the holidays. Billed as suitable for the whole family and with tickets ranging from £8 to £18 there are performances most afternoons and evenings from 15th to 19th April.

Royal Gunpowder Mills, Waltham Abbey EN9 1JY
During the Easter holidays the Royal Gunpowder Mills has 2 different themed events:
From Saturday 4th to Saturday 11th April it is about being a Space Explorer. Children can make their own rocket to take home, create a solar system hat, explore how rockets land on the moon and watch Professor Nitrate's explosive science show.
From Sunday 12th to Sunday 19th April the theme is the Science of Nature. Children can enjoy Easter themed arts and crafts, create a tornado, join in a teddy bears picnic and create art with flowers.
Gates open 10am, Last Entry 3pm. Tickets go on sale soon and last years prices were: Children £8.50, Adults £10.50 (aged 2 and under are free).

Rye-Assic Adventure Park at Rye House, Rye Road, Hoddesdon, Hertfordshire EN11 0EH
The dinosaur-themed Adventure Park in Hoddesdon will be transformed for their Easter events from the Friday 10th to 14th April to include: Easter egg hunt, messy play, costume competition and soft play. The 2.5 hour sessions are bookable here and cost £12.50 per child (1 to 12 years), adults and under 1s are free.

Thameside Theatre, Orsett Road, Grays, RM17 5DX
On 6th and 7th April there will be a musical production of Rapunzel at the Thameside Theatre in Thurrock. It's a new version promising to be more panto style than high drama. Tickets cost £10 for children (under 12s on laps do not require a ticket) and £12 for adults, available to book online. Afternoon and an evening performance available.

Thurrock Thameside Nature Park, Mucking Wharf Road, Mucking, Stanford Le Hope SS17 0RN
There will be a drop in, self led Easter trail around the park on Saturday 11th to Monday 13th April from 10.30am. Claim a chocolatey prize and do an Easter crafts session in the visitors centre afterwards. Suggested donation £7 per child. There are free car parks and a great playground also on the site.

Wild Forest Obstacle Activity Centre, Parsonage Farm, Ongar Road, Kelvedon Hatch, Brentwood, Essex, CM15 0LA
Good Friday Family Fun Time 10th April 10:00-11.30. It's 90 minutes of obstacles and mud fun for aged 6+. Hot outdoor showers available afterwards. Parents can enjoy a cuppa in the heated hub whilst the kids have an adventure in the forest or they can take part in the session. Buy an adult ticket and child goes free (£25) or £18.50 a child. Pre booking required.

Willows Activity Farm, London Colney, Hertfordshire AL4 0PF
Easter Eggstravaganza at Willows takes place from 4th to 19th April. Includes the Easter Egg Hunt, arts and crafts, feed and pet baby animals, Peter Rabbit and Friends shows and more
Open 10 am to 5.30pm. Tickets £22 for adults, £23 for children on the door, save £3 per person by booking in advance online.
